Most people are never actually taught how to study. They fall back on habits such as re-reading notes and highlighting textbooks, methods that feel productive but often deliver disappointing results. Decades of research into how memory and learning work point to a very different set of techniques, and the good news is that they are simple to adopt.

The single most powerful principle is active recall. Rather than passively reviewing material, you test yourself on it, forcing your brain to retrieve the information from memory. This effort of retrieval strengthens the memory far more than simply looking at the answer again. In practice this means closing the book and trying to explain a concept, answering practice questions, or using flashcards, instead of merely reading and re-reading.

Closely related is the reason re-reading feels effective but often is not. Seeing familiar material creates a sense of fluency, a comfortable feeling that you already know it. But recognising information when it is in front of you is very different from being able to recall it when it is not, such as in an exam or a real conversation. Testing yourself exposes the gaps that re-reading conceals, which is precisely why it is more useful, even though it feels harder.

A second major principle is spaced repetition. Instead of cramming all your study of a topic into one long session, you spread it out over days and weeks, revisiting the material at increasing intervals. Each time you return to something just as you are beginning to forget it, the memory is reinforced and lasts longer. Spacing takes advantage of the way the brain consolidates information over time, and it dramatically improves long-term retention compared with last-minute cramming.

Mixing up what you study, a technique called interleaving, also helps, though it can feel awkward. Rather than practising one type of problem repeatedly before moving on, you switch between related topics or problem types within a session. This forces your brain to identify which approach a problem requires, not just how to execute it, and builds a more flexible, durable understanding.

Explaining ideas in your own words is another reliable method, sometimes called elaboration or self-explanation. When you try to teach a concept, whether to another person or just out loud to yourself, you quickly discover which parts you truly understand and which you have only memorised superficially. Connecting new information to things you already know deepens comprehension and makes it easier to recall later.

The environment and rhythm of study matter too. Long, unbroken sessions tend to produce diminishing returns as attention fades. Shorter, focused blocks with genuine breaks are usually more effective, and minimising distractions, particularly the constant pull of a phone, allows deeper concentration. Sleep deserves special mention, because much of the consolidation of new memories happens during rest; a good night's sleep after studying is part of the learning process, not separate from it.

None of these techniques is complicated, but they share a common feature: they feel more effortful than passive review. That very difficulty, sometimes called desirable difficulty, is the point. The mental struggle of retrieving, spacing, and explaining is what builds lasting knowledge, whereas the easy comfort of highlighting and re-reading tends to fade quickly.

Adopting even a few of these methods, testing yourself instead of re-reading, spacing your revision, and explaining ideas aloud, can transform how much you retain from the same amount of time. Effective studying is less about how many hours you put in and far more about the quality of what you do during them.
