Professional footballer Andros Townsend has opened up about a bizarre and frightening episode during his time playing in Thailand, recalling the moment he was accidentally struck by a heavy pitch maintenance vehicle.

The 35-year-old winger, who previously featured for several prominent English Premier League clubs including Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace, relocated to Southeast Asia in 2025. He is currently playing in Thai League 1 for PT Prachuap, following an earlier stint with Kanchanaburi Power.

The incident took place on Saturday in Pattani as the athlete was preparing for an upcoming fixture. According to accounts shared during a recent media appearance, a member of the stadium ground staff appeared to lose control of the heavy machinery used to flatten the turf.

Townsend noticed two rollers positioned near the field during pre-match routines, noting that he initially found their presence unusual before dismissing the thought and continuing his warm-up. Moments later, the equipment moved directly toward him.

The player's left leg became briefly trapped beneath the moving apparatus. Caught underneath the weight, Townsend managed to use his left arm to lift and shift some of the pressure off his body while calling out for assistance.

Nearby team-mates rushed to the scene and helped lift the heavy machinery, allowing the midfielder to slide free. Townsend admitted that during the ordeal, he feared catastrophic damage to his previously operated left knee and ankle.

Despite the alarming nature of the accident, the veteran competitor walked away with only minor injuries. Medical evaluations revealed no fractures or major tears, leaving him with just a collection of bumps and bruises.

Astonishingly, Townsend elected to complete his warm-up session despite urging from his peers to seek immediate medical attention. He later appeared as a late substitute during the fixture, helping his side secure a 3-0 victory.

Reflecting on the event, the former England international expressed disbelief while reviewing footage of the collision. He acknowledged his great fortune in falling at precisely the right angle to prevent severe bone fractures.

Townsend later injected some humor into the situation on social media. Referring to a previous online comparison between a sunny Thai away match and a notoriously grueling trip to Stoke City's home ground, he quipped that visiting Stoke did not seem quite as difficult by comparison.

The athletic journeyman confirmed that the freak accident has not dampened his enthusiasm for the sport. He intends to continue his playing career without interruption following the recovery from his minor injuries.
