Copenhagen hosted an exhilarating day of competition at the World Road Running Championships, highlighted by a dramatic finish in the men's five-kilometer event. Norway's prominent distance runner Jakob Ingebrigtsen narrowly missed out on the top podium spot after a fierce battle down the final stretch.
Eritrean athlete Dawit Seare dug deep in the closing moments to edge past the Norwegian star and claim the gold medal. Seare completed the course in an impressive time of 12 minutes and 56 seconds, while his compatriot Saymon Amanuel secured the bronze medal.
For the 26-year-old Norwegian, the race marked just his sixth appearance during a campaign heavily disrupted by injuries. He entered the competition in the Danish capital less than two weeks after securing a track victory in Budapest. Initially appearing out of medal contention for much of the race, he launched a powerful surge inside the final thousand meters to briefly take command before Seare responded in the dying stages.
The women's five-kilometer race featured an equally commanding performance from Ethiopia's Likina Amebaw. Claiming victory in 14 minutes and 41 seconds, Amebaw established an early breakaway and maintained her dominance throughout the event. Caroline Gitonga of Kenya finished seven seconds adrift to take silver, and Australia's Rose Davies rounded out the podium with bronze. British competitor Hannah Nuttall crossed the finish line in 10th place with a time of 15 minutes and 8 seconds.
In the men's mile, Germany's Robert Farken delivered a major upset by capturing his first major international title. American runner Yared Nuguse controlled the pace from the start but was overtaken in the final hundred meters, allowing Farken to cross the line first in three minutes and 51.80 seconds. British athlete Jake Heyward placed 11th, setting a personal best road mark of three minutes and 55.76 seconds.
France's Agathe Guillemot claimed the women's mile title by executing a perfectly timed tactical finish. Her winning time of four minutes and 22.74 seconds stands as the quickest road performance globally this year. She outpaced Ethiopia's Freweyni Hailu in the closing meters, with Kenya's Mirriam Cherop taking third place and Britain's Katie Snowden finishing 16th.
The elite showcase forms the opening half of an extensive two-day running festival in the Danish capital. The marquee half-marathon competitions are scheduled to conclude the weekend events on Sunday.
