Brighton defender Pascal Struijk has had his red card from last weekend's match against Sunderland overturned following a successful appeal.

The incident occurred in the 57th minute of the fixture at the Stadium of Light when Struijk was initially penalised during a challenge with Sunderland forward Wilson Isidor. Neither the referee on the field nor his assistant stopped play for a foul as Isidor chased a through-ball towards goal.

However, the video assistant referee advised match official Thomas Bramall to review the incident on the pitchside monitor. Following multiple replays, the referee decided to dismiss the defender for the denial of an obvious goalscoring opportunity, a ruling that drew immediate protests from the Brighton squad.

Despite playing with ten men for a significant portion of the second half, Brighton managed to secure a 2-0 victory to maintain their impressive early-season campaign. The Seagulls currently sit in third place in the league standings, five points adrift of table leaders Manchester City.

The successful wrongful dismissal claim means the defender avoids an automatic one-match suspension. He will now be eligible for selection when Brighton face Crystal Palace in their upcoming Premier League fixture.

Struijk moved to the south-coast club from Leeds United during the summer transfer window in a deal valued at £20 million. The recent match against Sunderland marked only his second league start since joining his new team.

The overturned decision highlights ongoing discussions surrounding the threshold for video review interventions in subjective match scenarios. Analysts noted that instances involving the denial of clear scoring opportunities rarely result in red cards via video review due to the high degree of interpretation required regarding player control and positioning.
