Wigan Warriors secured the sixth League Leaders' Shield in the club's history following a comprehensive victory over the Catalans Dragons to conclude the regular Super League season. Matt Peet's squad crossed the try line nine times during the fixture, extending an impressive winning streak to 16 consecutive matches as they head into the upcoming play-offs.

The triumph adds a second piece of silverware to Wigan's cabinet for the year, following their success in the Challenge Cup final back in May. After failing to capture any trophies during the previous season following a dominant quadruple campaign in 2024, the team remains in contention to secure a prestigious treble.

The groundwork for the shield triumph was largely laid the previous week when Wigan defeated title contenders Leeds Rhinos away from home to claim the top spot in the standings. That crucial result prevented Leeds from executing a late-season surge, leaving the Rhinos to slip further following a subsequent loss to Hull FC.

Wigan's journey to the top of the table required a significant recovery following a turbulent period earlier in the campaign. A heavy defeat against Hull KR in May marked a difficult stretch where the team dropped five out of nine matches and sat in sixth place. However, the club completely reversed its trajectory starting with their Wembley cup triumph and has remained undefeated across all competitions since.

Prior to kick-off, the home crowd and players paid tribute to veteran captain Liam Farrell, who has confirmed he will retire at the conclusion of the season. Team members wore special warm-up shirts featuring the player's nickname and squad number, and Farrell marked his return from a shoulder injury by scoring a try before halftime.

Harry Smith opened the scoring for the hosts with an early individual effort, though Catalans responded quickly through a solo try by Ugo Tison. Wigan gradually asserted dominance as Liam Marshall and Brad O'Neill added tries before the interval, establishing a comfortable margin.

The second half saw further dominance from the hosts as Austin Daniel, Jai Field, and Zach Eckersley extended the advantage. Adam Keighran contributed heavily with the boot alongside an individual try of his own, while Marshall crossed for his second score of the evening. Catalans managed a late consolation try through Alexis Lis, with retiring player Ben Garcia successfully kicking the conversion.

By finishing in the top two of the league table, Wigan secured a valuable week off ahead of their next fixture. The team will host a Super League play-off semi-final on Saturday, September 12.

For the visiting Catalans side, the defeat brings a challenging campaign to a close with a ninth-place finish in the league standings. Les Dracs have now failed to reach the end-of-season play-offs since their appearance in the 2023 Grand Final, where they were also defeated by Wigan.
