Three individuals lost their lives and two others sustained injuries when a local television news helicopter went down in a suburban area of Los Angeles on Tuesday evening. The aircraft, belonging to broadcaster NBC Los Angeles, was stationed over the Chatsworth neighborhood to cover a fatal traffic collision involving a city bus that had occurred earlier in the day.

According to local fire officials, the aircraft crashed just before 7:00 p.m. local time in an area situated between two commercial properties. The impact and subsequent fire damaged multiple vehicles and storage containers nearby. More than 70 firefighters responded to the incident to combat the flames and secure the area.

Broadcasters at the station confirmed that the two occupants of the helicopter perished in the accident. They were identified as reporter Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw. Authorities stated that the third fatality occurred on the ground, though that individual's identity was not immediately released. Two additional people were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

The aerial news crew had been reporting on a separate tragedy that unfolded earlier on the same day in the same neighborhood. In that initial incident, an SUV collided with a public transit bus, resulting in two deaths and leaving six other people injured. Several media aircraft were circling the zone to document the ongoing emergency response when the helicopter accident occurred.

Elected officials and law enforcement agencies expressed their condolences following the dual tragedies. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass shared her devastation over the loss of life, while California Governor Gavin Newsom thanked the emergency personnel who worked through the night at both crash sites. Law enforcement representatives also extended their sympathies to the families and colleagues affected by the aviation accident.

Federal investigators will spearhead the inquiry into the cause of the helicopter crash. The National Transportation Safety Board announced it would examine the circumstances surrounding the incident in the Chatsworth district.
