Leh administration officials have announced financial assistance for families impacted by a tragic security incident that occurred in the region last September. The local government has finalized compensation packages following months of community distress over the fatal clashes.
Under the newly approved measures, the relatives of the four individuals who lost their lives during the demonstrations will receive fifteen lakh rupees each. The announcement comes approximately one year after the unrest unfolded in the high-altitude territory.
In addition to supporting the families of the deceased, the compensation scheme addresses those who sustained physical harm during the demonstrations. Individuals who suffered major injuries are set to receive three lakh rupees, while those with minor injuries will be granted one lakh rupees.
The violence last September erupted during large-scale public demonstrations organized to voice significant political grievances. Participants in the rallies were demanding full statehood for Ladakh along with constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule of the national constitution.
Those protests eventually led to tense confrontations and strict administrative interventions by security forces. Authorities placed heavy restrictions on movement across the area and detained more than eighty participants in the aftermath of the unrest.
Alongside the financial relief announced for victims and their relatives, the government has decided to drop legal proceedings against the individuals who were arrested during the disturbances. Officials indicated that the pending cases linked to the protests will be officially withdrawn.
The region has remained a focal point for regional political aspirations since it was reorganized into a separate union territory. Community leaders and local organizations have continued to advocate for increased legislative protections to preserve local land, culture, and employment opportunities.
